Psalms

Thank you tri-state for another successful show! Be looking for information about our next show. Details to be released Summer 2011.

Psalms >> Songs. Poems. Hymns. It is said that this collection of 150 sacred compositions express the full range of ancient Israel’s religious faith.
There are Psalms of rejoicing, grief, hope, despair, lament, peace, worship, praise, creation, and destruction. Each is unique, and yet, together they weave a compelling narrative: the raw expression of humanity lifted to the ears of a hearing, caring, and rescuing God.

The challenge for the artist was to select one of these ancient Psalms and let some portion of that Psalm serve as the inspiration for a new original work of art.

Olive Tree Arts invited area artists to be inspired by the Psalms, and in so doing, inspire a community.

I just wanted to know if the artwork had to be completed by Nov. 20? I was unsure what that day consisted of.

    thanks.

Artwork just needs to be completed for submission any time from February 25 to March 18, 2011. On November 20 we will hold a “Demo Day”. It’s an opportunity to ask questions about the show, be introduced to the theme, and learn some technique from selected area artists. There will be door prizes, and lunch provided. You can RSVP for demo day by sending an email to info@olivetreearts.org.

I attended the Demo Day Workshop today and it was excellent. Really looking forward with much anticipation to this event.

My sister-in-law, Emily Brian, told us about this and my husband is very interested. He is always wanting to minister through his art. He is really into woodburning right now and almost every one of his pieces are spiritual in nature. Do you take woodburnings as mixed media?

    Thanks,
    Amie Price

  5. Olive Tree Arts November 22, 2010 at 4:46 pm #

    Amie,

Yes, we would consider a woodburning piece. The only stipulation would be whether or not the piece was able to convey the theme.

    Thanks for being there Becky!

  7. Sharon Harrison January 10, 2011 at 5:14 pm #

I wonder if my canvas will meet the requirements for the show. It is 25 x 20. Please let me know. Sharon

  8. Carol Bosko January 17, 2011 at 7:06 pm #

I am hoping to enter this show, I was unable to go to the Nov. 20th meeting. I have a question, who is judging the show? And is there anything I should know besides what is in the broschure.
    Thank-you, Carol Bosko

This year, our juror is Fred Reeves owner of One Art Gallery in Henderson, KY. He’s been a gallery owner for the past eight years, and he has a long list of achievements and creative accolades.

    Thanks,

    Olive Tree Arts

  10. Olive Tree Arts January 18, 2011 at 3:19 am #

Yes, 25×20 would meet the requirements. Remember, that for this year’s show, the width of 2D pieces cannot exceed 40″ (this is total width including the frame).

Hello, I’m sure I missed this in the information, but is there a 100 word limit on the artist’s statement? Thank you!

  12. Olive Tree Arts January 31, 2011 at 2:13 pm #

    Hi Becky,

You didn’t miss it. So you know, there is not an official word limit on the artist’s inspiration statement. Please do try to keep them concise.

    Thanks,

    Olive Tree Arts

Would there be a possibility that you would accept a piece for the show Friday the 15th? I know I have arrangements to be out of town that weekend and have no one to bring it that weekend. Thank you!

  14. Olive Tree Arts February 25, 2011 at 8:09 am #

    Hi Mitch,

Assuming your piece is accepted into ‘Psalms’ we would work with you on a day for delivery. If accepted, we would first encourage you to seek a friend or someone who could deliver the artwork April 16 or 17. If there is no one available to deliver the artwork for you, we will workout an acceptable alternative. Thanks for the question.

I wish to enter a photograph on which I made some changes on Photoshop.
The only main change is that I placed the text of the Psalm on the picture.
Will this be classed as a photo or digital art?
    Thank you, John

  16. Olive Tree Arts March 3, 2011 at 8:31 pm #

    John,

Thanks for the question. For our show, any change to the image that alters the image constitutes as digital art. So, we would classify what you’re piece as digital art or 2-D

    Thanks,

    Olive Tree Arts

  17. John Hendricks March 4, 2011 at 9:26 am #

    Thank you.
There is another picture I’ve been working on for a few weeks and have Photoshopped it completely.
But the image was not taken within the last year.
The digital art is all new, made to look like a water color, and only similar to the photo, so is it eligible?
Not a good time to ask, but I hurriedly started on it because of the inspiration it gave me, without thinking of the lapsed time.

  18. Olive Tree Arts March 4, 2011 at 10:11 am #

    John,

Yes, since the piece is being compiled this year, it is eligible.

    Thanks,

    Olive Tree Arts

  19. Ann Yates March 6, 2011 at 10:02 pm #

The scholar division says age 12-17 on or before 4/30/10. My son is 18, but according to what is stated in rules, since he was only 17 on 4/30/10 he would still be in the scholar division. Is that correct?

  20. Olive Tree Arts March 7, 2011 at 10:35 am #

    Ann,

Our apologies for the confusion. It should have read age 12-17 on or before 4/30/11, not 4/30/10. The artist date is relative to opening night. So, if you son is currently 18, than he would be artist community since he turned 18 before 4/30/11.

    Thanks

    Olive Tree Arts

Does a musical composition have to have been written within the past year also?

  22. Olive Tree Arts March 16, 2011 at 3:12 pm #

No, but it cannot have been entered in another competition.

  23. Rachel March 17, 2011 at 9:41 pm #

when it says the submissions are open through 3/18/2011 does that mean midnight on the 18th, i have a few last minute adjustments and just hoping i get it in on time.

  24. joy March 17, 2011 at 10:01 pm #

For the musical compostion, do you want just the music score and or lyrics or all of the above and a recording of the music?

  25. Olive Tree Arts March 17, 2011 at 11:07 pm #

    Rachel,

Submissions will close at 12:00AM, Saturday, March 19.

  26. Olive Tree Arts March 17, 2011 at 11:08 pm #

    Joy,

For musical composition, we need a recording of the composition in .mp3 format.

  27. Joy Uduehi March 18, 2011 at 11:26 pm #

i am trying to submit my audio recording, but i am having troubles with it.

  28. Olive Tree Arts March 20, 2011 at 9:41 pm #

    Joy,

please send an email to assistance@olivetreearts.org and we will try to assist you.

I submitted my piece on March 18th and I never recieved any email saying if it got accepted or not so if you would please get back to me that would be great.
    Thanks

  31. Doug Knight March 29, 2011 at 5:38 am #

I submitted two pieces before the deadline. I read that an email would be sent to those whose pieces would be approved by March 25. I have not received an email, so I assume my submissions will not make the art show. Is there a way I can receive a critique on the pieces and learn why the art was not approved?

    Thanks, Doug Knight

  32. Olive Tree Arts March 29, 2011 at 4:53 pm #
